Veurne, coveted by Vikings, put up defences in the form of a castle on a small island in a marshy, water-rich area. Veurne developed around this castle, into a city with great character. Centuries passed and magnificent buildings such as the St.-Walburga church started adorning the city, and together with the Stad- en Landshuis (Town Hall and Manor House), the Spaans Paviljoen (Spanish Pavilion) and other buildings, it shapes one of the most beautiful market squares in Belgium.
