The lowest point in Belgium is in De Moeren which is two metres below sea level. This area was drained in the 18th century. The windmill Sint-Gustaafsmolen, where the Flemish artist Willem Vermandere once had a studio, helped to drain this area. Via the De Panne hinterland we reach Veurne where we stop off to climb the tower of the Sint-Niklaas Church for some wonderful views over the polders. Quaint villages such as Steenkerke and Oeren offer some great resting places where they serve regional beers or you can have a picnic in the gardens of Beauvoorde Castle in Wulveringem. Houtem housed the headquarters of the Belgian Army during the First World War.
