De Moeren is not just a village, but also a sprawling landscape. De Moeren is about 4 metres below sea level. In the 17th century, Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella ordered architect and engineer Cobergher to drain and reclaim the entire area.
The dike used to be lined with windmills that transferred the water from the low-lying Moeren to the Ringslot. The handsome Sint-Karels mill and the bladeless Sint-Gustaafs mill still remind us of these times. You certainly shouldn’t miss out on a picon at the border (‘schreve’).
