The WWI Experience Centre Vrij Vaderland is housed in the Stad- en Landshuis (Town Hall and Manor House). Vrij Vaderland does not focus on the battleground of the Big War, but on the little remaining piece of free Belgium, the “Belgian Sector”. Veurne became the temporary capital of our country, as it were. From here, Albert I - King of Belgium - succeeded in upholding the defences against the German occupier. We experience life behind the front line, the daily life in this last piece of unoccupied land. A true melting pot of people converged, multiculturalism before its time. Veurne and surrounding areas were home to soldiers from Belgium and the rest of the world, but also to refugees, doctors and nurse. Vrij Vaderland presents the story in atmospheric scenography with the help of both modern media and traditional techniques. After this, you will explore the surroundings of the Grote Markt during a short WWI walk.
